Dogs – you gotta love ’em.

Their sweet nature and lovable demeanor are just too sweet not adore. And Gavel the puppy? He’s definitely one of those pups that are truly irresistible – and his backstory is even cuter than his looks!

Gavel is a pup that has quite a proper and prim lifestyle but it didn’t always start out that way. In fact, Gavel, a German Shepherd, was originally enrolled in a police dog academy with the Queensland Police Service in Australia.

When he was first enrolled in the academy, everyone had high hopes for the puppers. The police even released a statement saying:

“Gavel comes from a long line of pedigree… if the family bloodline is anything to go by, in 16 months Gavel will be tracking and catching criminals as a proud member of the Queensland Dog Squad!”

Now, however, Gavel has the fancy title of Vice-Regal Dog for Queensland, Australia. But that’s only because he was a bit too friendly for the police force.

Apparently, Gavel “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the front line” and he absolutely loved to run up and meet strangers. Luckily for the gregarious German Shepherd, he had grown up being fostered at the official residence of the Queensland governor ever since he was just 6-weeks old.

Hearing that Gavel wasn’t going to be the best fit for the police force, Gov. Paul de Jersey didn’t hesitate to give the adorable and friendly dog a different and more-fitting job for his personality.

“He has outgrown four ceremonial coats, undergone a career change (his official title is now Gavel VRD, ‘Vice-Regal Dog’), and brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate,” the office of Governor Paul de Jersey told BBC News.

Instead of helping catch bad guys, Gavel’s duties include welcoming tours and other guests to the prestigious address of Queensland’s Government House. He also takes part in ceremonial events.

Luckily for all of us, since Gavel has taken on his new title, the governor has been sharing lots of pictures on social media. It’s clear that he brings a smile to anyone’s face who meets him and that this job title was the one that was meant for him!

“We hope Gavel’s with us for a long, long time into the future,” Governor de Jersey said according to Travel and Leisure.

We can’t get enough of Gavel and it’s clear that all of his fans on social media can’t either.

Check out some of people’s comments:

“Gavel you are such good boy and a QUEENSLANDER❤️” said debscat1958.

He even has fans from across the world!

“Doing great job Gavel! Greetings from Finland,” said loviisa.kohteen.

And if there’s one thing everyone can agree on – Gavel looks absolutely fabulous doing his job!

“The most regal dog in the world,” confirmed lydiadani.
